What to bring to your first Muay Thai class

Starting Muay Thai is exciting — and a little intimidating if you don't know what to expect. Good news: you need almost nothing for your first class. Here's the simple checklist.
What to wear
- Comfortable athletic clothes. Shorts or athletic pants and a t-shirt or tank. That's it for day one.
- Nothing restrictive. You'll be kicking, kneeing and moving a lot, so pick something you can move freely in.
What to bring
- Water. Muay Thai is a serious workout; bring a bottle.
- A small towel. You will sweat.
- Hand wraps (optional). Nice to have if you own them, but not required for a first class — we can lend gear to get you started.
What you DON'T need yet
You do not need to buy gloves, shin guards or a mouthguard before your first class. Try the sport first, then invest once you know you're staying.
When you do continue, we'll advise you on gloves and shin guards, and members get a discount on gear. No need to spend anything to start.
What actually happens in class
A typical session runs like this:
- Warm-up — movement, footwork and light conditioning.
- Technique — the coach teaches strikes and combinations; you drill them on pads or in the air.
- Pad work / bag — putting it together at your own pace.
And to answer the big question: no, you won't be thrown into sparring. Sparring is optional, controlled and only when you're ready. Plenty of people train Muay Thai for years for fitness and never spar.
A few tips
- Arrive 10 minutes early and tell the coach it's your first class.
- Trim your nails and come clean — you'll be close to training partners.
- Go at your own pace. Everyone in the room started somewhere.
