Training BJJ in Mexico City: a traveler's guide

Mexico City has become one of Latin America's best destinations for traveling grapplers: great gyms, a growing scene and a Gracie lineage running deep. If you're visiting and want to keep training, here's what you need to know about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in CDMX.
Where to base yourself: Condesa & Roma
Most visiting athletes stay in Condesa or neighboring Roma — leafy, walkable, safe, and packed with cafés and restaurants to refuel after class. If you want to roll out of bed and be on the mats in minutes, this is the area to book. Read our Condesa neighborhood guide for the full picture.
How drop-ins work
Most academies welcome visitors. The norm is to message ahead on WhatsApp to confirm the class and the drop-in rate. At MD Condesa we host visitors year-round; just message us with the day you'd like to train. See our drop-in guide for details, and read up on drop-in etiquette if you're new to visiting gyms abroad.
Gi or No-Gi — what to pack
- Gi: bring your own kimono. Gi days are common early in the week.
- No-Gi: a rashguard and shorts. Great if you're traveling light.
- Everyone: flip-flops for off the mat, water, and clean gear. Standard hygiene and etiquette apply everywhere.
The language question
Classes are usually taught in Spanish, but BJJ is a visual, universal language — and at gyms like ours several coaches and many students speak English. You'll follow the technique fine and be made to feel welcome.
Altitude is real
Mexico City sits at ~2,240 m (7,350 ft). If you're coming from sea level, your cardio will feel the altitude for the first few days. Pace your rounds, hydrate, and you'll adapt.
Why train at MD Condesa
We're part of Renzo Gracie Mexico, and our founder Mario Delgado is Mexico's first Gracie black belt, awarded directly by Renzo. You'll get real training in a friendly room, right on Parque México. One drop-in also gives you access to Muay Thai, MMA and boxing if you want to mix it up.
Message us on WhatsApp to set up your session, or book a trial class. Come train with us in Condesa.
